What Is Chanca Piedra? Benefits, Uses, and How to Take the 'Stone Breaker' Herb
The herb that built itself a reputation
Walk through any open-air market in Lima or up in the Amazon and you'll see bundles of small green leaves with a name that doesn't bother to be subtle: Chanca Piedra — "stone breaker" in Spanish. People in Peru have been brewing it for kidney and gallbladder support for generations. Long enough that researchers eventually got curious, which is partly why so many of our customers now have it in their cabinet.
What it actually is
Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) is a tropical plant that grows wild across the Amazon basin and parts of the Andes. The whole above-ground plant gets harvested — leaves, stems, and the small fruit-like seed capsules. Most people take it as a tea or in capsules.
The "stone breaker" name comes straight from folk medicine. It's been used to help the body pass kidney and gallbladder stones for at least 2,000 years, in Peruvian, Brazilian, and Ayurvedic traditions.
What people use it for
In Peru, you'll mostly hear about Chanca Piedra in the context of:
- Kidney and urinary tract function
- Helping pass small kidney stones
- Gallbladder and bile flow
- Daily liver support
- General hydration and fluid balance
It's typically taken as a daily tea after meals, or in capsules during periods of cleansing.
What the research suggests
Chanca Piedra contains compounds called phyllanthin, hypophyllanthin, and a mix of flavonoids. Research has looked at these for:
- Kidney stones. Some studies suggest the plant can slow the formation of calcium oxalate crystals (the most common type of kidney stone) and help the body break them down.
- Liver health. Chanca Piedra's polyphenols have antioxidant effects in the liver.
- Urinary comfort. Some research backs up its traditional use as an aid for urinary tract wellness.

Tea or capsules?
This is the question we get most. There's no wrong answer.
Chanca Piedra Tea
Tea is how Peruvians have always taken it. It's gentle on the stomach, you get a fair amount of the plant in a single cup, and there's a ritual to it — boil water, steep, sit with it. Our Chanca Piedra Tea is one of our top sellers, especially with people who like making it part of their post-dinner routine.
Available formats:
- Chanca Piedra Tea (Stone Breaker) — 25, 50, or 100 tea bags
- Chanca Piedra Loose Leaf — for brewing from whole dried herb
How to brew: 1 tea bag (or 1 tsp loose leaf) in 8 oz of hot water for 5–7 minutes. Most people drink 2–3 cups a day, between or after meals.
Chanca Piedra Capsules
Capsules win on convenience. You don't have to brew, you don't have to think about it, and the dose stays consistent. Each of ours is 100% pure dried herb — no fillers.
Available formats:
- Chanca Piedra Stone Breaker — 180 caps
- Chanca Piedra Stone Breaker — 300 caps (best value per capsule)
- Chanca Piedra Tablets — 150 count, easier to swallow, blended with milk thistle and dandelion
How to take: 1–2 capsules with water, twice a day.
Picking what works for you
If you like the ritual of tea, take the tea. If you want zero prep and consistency, take the capsules. Plenty of customers do both — capsules during the day, tea at night. The thing that matters is taking it regularly. A bottle in the cabinet you forget about doesn't do much.
Side effects and who should be careful
Chanca Piedra is generally well tolerated. As with any herb, talk to your doctor first if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Take diabetes or blood pressure medication
- Have an existing kidney condition (beyond stones)
- Have surgery coming up — Chanca Piedra has mild blood-thinning effects
FAQ
How long until I notice anything?
Most people drink the tea or take the capsules consistently for 2–4 weeks before noticing changes. Like most herbal traditions, consistency matters more than dose.
Can I drink it every day?
People in Peru drink it daily for years. For long-term use, it's reasonable to take occasional breaks — say, a week off every couple of months.
Is it safe with prescriptions?
Check with your doctor or pharmacist. Chanca Piedra can interact with diabetes meds, blood pressure meds, blood thinners, and lithium.
Where does yours come from?
Peru. Our Chanca Piedra is harvested by traditional collectors and small Peruvian growers we've worked with for years.
