What Is Riñosan? The Peruvian Kidney Blend Explained

The Peruvian kidney blend explained

If you spend any time around Peruvian wellness traditions, "Riñosan" comes up a lot. It's not a single herb — it's a blend, named for the Spanish words riñón (kidney) and san (healthy). The combination has been used for generations in the Andes for kidney and urinary support. Here's what's in it, what it does, and how to take it.

What's in the blend

Traditional Riñosan combines four of Peru's most respected kidney-support herbs:

  • Chanca Piedra (Stone Breaker) — for kidney stone support and overall kidney function
  • Cat's Claw (Uña de Gato) — for inflammation and immune support
  • Horsetail (Cola de Caballo) — silica-rich, traditionally for urinary flow
  • Huamanpinta — a less-known Andean herb used for kidney inflammation

The idea isn't that any one herb does everything. It's that they cover different angles of kidney wellness, and together they give a more complete daily support routine than any single herb alone.

What it's traditionally used for

  • Daily kidney function support
  • Urinary tract wellness
  • Helping pass small kidney stones
  • Reducing kidney-area inflammation
  • General hydration and fluid balance

Peruvians often drink it as a daily afternoon or evening tea, especially during periods when they want extra kidney support — long days of physical work, heavy meals, or after holiday eating.

Why a blend instead of single herbs?

You could absolutely take Chanca Piedra alone, then Cat's Claw alone, then horsetail alone. People do. The reason blends like Riñosan exist is convenience and balance. One cup, four herbs, complete support. You don't need to brew three teas a day or take six different capsules.

It's also gentler than mega-doses of single herbs. Each component is at a moderate level, which means you can take it daily for longer without your body adjusting.

FAQ

How long until I notice anything?

2–4 weeks of consistent daily use. Like most Peruvian herbal traditions, gradual support not instant fix.

Can I take it long-term?

Yes. Many traditional users drink it daily for years. For continuous use, occasional 1-week breaks every couple of months are reasonable.

What does Huamanpinta do?

It's a lesser-known Andean herb (Chuquiraga spinosa) traditionally used for kidney inflammation. Less studied than the other ingredients but a long history of folk use in the Andes for urinary comfort.
