5 Reasons People Drink Valerian Tea Before Bed

If you've never tried it, here's why people swear by it

Valerian root is one of those herbs most Americans haven't grown up with, but the rest of the world has been brewing for thousands of years. In Peru, a cup of valerian tea before bed is what chamomile is in Europe and Sleepytime is in the US — except valerian actually does something. Here are the main reasons people keep ordering it.

1. It actually helps you fall asleep faster

Most herbal sleep aids are pretty mild. Valerian is the exception. Several small clinical trials have linked valerian root with shorter time to fall asleep and better sleep quality, especially when taken consistently for a couple of weeks. The active compounds (valerenic acid and others) appear to interact with GABA receptors in the brain — the same neurotransmitter system prescription sleep meds target, just much gentler.

2. It calms anxious brains without knocking you out

Valerian doesn't sedate you the way medication does. It dials down the noise. Customers describe it as the difference between "passing out" and "winding down naturally." A lot of people take it during stressful weeks even when they're sleeping fine — just to take the edge off in the evening.

3. It's not habit-forming

This is the big one for people coming off prescription sleep aids or melatonin. Valerian doesn't build dependence the way some sleep meds do, and you don't get the morning grogginess. You can take it nightly for months or stop cold, and your sleep doesn't fall apart.

4. It pairs with everything else in your sleep routine

Valerian plays well with chamomile, lemon balm (toronjil), linden (tilo), and our Nerviosan blend. A lot of customers stack it: valerian as the base, chamomile or lemon balm for added calm, linden for the slow drift. The Sleep Support collection has all of these.

5. The flavor is… an acquired taste

Won't lie. Valerian smells like wet earth and tastes like it. Most people add a little honey, cinnamon, or mix it with chamomile to soften the flavor. It's not pleasant the way mint tea is pleasant. But neither is medicine, and that's not really why people drink it.

How to take it

Brew 1 tea bag (or 1 tsp loose leaf) in 8 oz of hot water for 5–10 minutes. Drink 30–60 minutes before bed. Effects build over 2–3 weeks of consistent use, so don't judge it after one cup.

We carry it as Valerian Tea bags, plus capsules if you'd rather skip the brewing.
